Happy is one of the main characters from the Fairy Tail anime and manga.

Happy is a member of the Exceed, a race of cat-like beings from the parallel world of Edolas that can sprout wings and fly using the magic Aera. Separated from his parents as an egg and sent to Earth-land along with 99 other unborn Exceed when his homeland's destruction was prophesied, he was found and hatched by Natsu, and the two have remained inseparable friends ever since. He is an invaluable source of support for his friends, though he's not above exchanging snarky quips with them, especially Lucy.

In the AWA fics, Happy is a student at the AWA Academy.

In the XP4 fics, Happy debuted in the XP4 Heroes Coalition - Neo-City Diaries.

Appearance

Happy is a small blue Exceed with a white stomach. He has a rectangular head, with pink ears, big black eyes with small, thin eyebrows, and light blue cheek marks near to his tiny whiskers (two on each side of his face). Happy has a triangular nose that leads to semi-round upper lips on the sides. His body is rectangular too, and being an Exceed, it has a structure that allows him to walk erect, unlike normal cats. Despite having no thumbs, Happy is able to hold things. He has a long, white-tipped tail; and the other parts of his tail are blue. Additionally, Happy is able to use his tail to hold onto objects. Happy is usually seen carrying around a green backpack, where he keeps food and items that can be used in battle. This backpack also covers his green Guild Mark that is on his back. When using his Magic, he can grow a pair of large, feathered, angel-like wings that allow him to fly around and carry others. Happy usually does not wear clothes, the only few times being during the Fantasia Parade, to disguise himself in Edolas, and when his parents gave him clothes, again in Edolas.

Personality

Despite his small stature and eccentric appearance, Happy is very loyal to his teammates and fellow guild members and has a fairly significant amount of knowledge of the Magic world, in some cases, more than Lucy and Natsu. Given that he has been around Natsu Dragneel since his own birth, Happy often emulates Natsu in his actions and responses. He is quick-witted and cheeky, especially to Lucy Heartfilia; however, Happy sometimes shows little bits of a darker side of himself, for example when making a comment on the devastating aspects of the Magic of his comrades.

He loves fish more than anything else, and he doesn't like dogs (except for Plue). He offers a comic relief with his catchphrase, "Aye!" or "Aye Sir!". He holds a respect and admiration to Exceed like himself and drools on Loke's shoulder when he finds out that Loke is the celestial spirit of Leo the Lion. Happy has also developed a strong affection towards Carla, another Exceed who at first blows him off, but then begins to like and respect him.

XP4 Fanfics

Happy is a member of the Heroes Coalitions and is an honorary member of the Squad of Excellence. He also attends the Vanguard Academy as a student.

XP4 Heroes Coalition - Neo-City Diaries

In Chapter 7, Happy, alongside members of the Universal Guardians and Squad of Excellence, is present in the Mission Briefing Room in the Training Facility where Dr. Michael Pating brief them about their mission in the Halidom of Ylisse before departing.

XP4 Heroes Coalition - Awakening

In Chapter 1, Happy, alongside members of the Universal Guardians and Squad of Excellence, arrives in a forest somewhere in Ylisse and appears to be lost. They later came across Chrom, Frederick, Lissa and Robin and quickly befriends them. After having conversation about the Emotionless, both sides decided to work together to eliminate the creatures. They decided to camp for the rest of the night.

In Chapter 2, Happy, alongside members of the Universal Guardians, the Squad of Excellence and Chrom's group, arrives in Ylisse and met up with Owain. Later, after Chrom decided to have a meeting with Frederick, Geo Stelar and Luna Platz, the rest decided to meet up with the Shepherds at the garrison. Later, Chrom and the others arrived and claims to have an announcement.

In Chapter 3, Happy, alongside his team, Gaius, Sully, Stahl and Panne, are seen walking around the large field somewhere in Ylisstol when they came across a group of Zealots and engaged in a battle with them. They managed to overpower them causing the red & blue colored simulation troopers to retreat. Confirming that Dr. Dolan Danger is in this world, they decided to head back to warn the others.

In Chapter 5, Happy, alongside his team, Frederick, Maribelle, Virion, Kellam, Say'ri, Cherche and Vaike, are seen walking around a large field outside Ylisstol when they came across Dr. Dolan Danger and Jerry Jonny Torr McGee. After the doctor accidentally telling them his plans of obtaining the Ara-Ka Cube, much to everyone's disbelief. After that, the doctor ordered the Zealots to attack them but they quickly defeated them, prompting their enemies to flee.

In Chapter 7, Happy appears next to Natsu Dragneel, the latter scrubbing Dan Kusou's underwear, he pointed out that it's Natsu's fault for taking a bet with Dan.

In Chapter 11, Happy is at the garrison when they heard a noise, they ran to the corridors to see Ryuuko Matoi and Ricken chasing a strange hooded figure. Everyone went after the figure and led them to a large grassy fields, and reveals itself as a Pokemon known as Hitmonlee. The Pokemon then revealed that he stole an ancient alien artifact called the Ara-Ka Cube inside the castle. Everyone watches in horror as Hitmonlee uses the alien artifact to summon a zombified version of Emmeryn and Phila, much to everyone's disgust. Hitmonlee then summoned a large number of Emotionless, forcing Happy and everyone to fight. Happy then witnessed Donnel activating his Gift.

In Chapter 12 & Epilogue, Happy, alongside everyone, witnessed Donnel activating his Gift turning both Emmeryn and Phila back to life. After defeating the remaining Emotionless, forcing Hitmonlee to flee, life in Ylisstol went back to normal.

Abilities

Aera: Happy is able to sprout angelic wings that give him the ability to fly and carry objects or one person at a time for a specific amount of time.

• Max Speed: Happy utilizes a considerable amount of Magic Power to fly as fast as he can. This speed can be used to dodge incoming attacks or to attack the enemy. A disadvantage of this technique would be a rapid loss of Magic Power, in relation to how long Happy uses this technique.
  • Max Speed Attack: While using Max Speed, Happy flies as fast as he can, and then strikes the opponent with his own head. This attack was powerful enough to destroy a Thunder Palace Lacrima, which was about twice the size of Happy.

Transformation Magic (Henshin Mahō): Mirajane taught Happy, Natsu and Lucy basic spells of Transformation Magic. However, Happy is only able to transform into a super deformed version of Lucy. Unfortunately, his attempt was a failure and in Lucy's words, "creepy".

Enhanced Durability: Despite his small and seemingly frail stature, Happy has proven to possess incredible durability by surviving a city-wide explosion caused by Jackal, one of the Nine Demon Gates, despite being in the center of the explosion when it occurred

Trivia

• Hiro Mashima was originally going to name Happy "Freyr" after the Norse god but didn't think it would suit his character.
• From the Volume 16 Limited Edition: Sorcerer Interview, the best quality of Fairy Tail according to Happy was that "Fairy Tail made the best fish entrees"! He wants to see Igneel in the future. Has a good relationship with Natsu and Lucy. The hardest job Happy ever took was fishing for the Winged Fishes, which tasted horrible.
